Sowing method
6-10 seeds in plugs
Germination
Stage I (7-14 days)
Cover: Place a light cover of vermiculite over the seeds
Light: No additional lighting is needed in the plug stages.
Relative humidity levels: Levels of 95% or higher are optimal.
Moisture: Keep media moist; do not allow media to dry out
Growing on
Transplant plugs after 5-7 weeks. Maintain temperatures of 60-65 °F (15-18 °C). Fertilize at 150-200 ppm nitrogen. Maintain pH levels of 5.5-6.0 and EC levels of <1.0.
Media
Maintain media pH of 5.5-6.5, EC: <0.5
Temperature
Maintain day temperatures of 25 °C and night temperatures of 15 °C. There is a direct relationship between temperature fluctuation and germination in Carex. The larger the fluctuation in ambient temperature between day and night set points, the higher the germination rate.
Stage I Starts with the radicle breaking through the testa. The roots are touching the medium. Ends with fully developed cotyledons.
Stage II Starts from fully developed cotyledons. Ends with the fully developed true leaf or true leaf pair.
Stage III Starts from the fully developed true leaf or true leaf pair and ends with 80% of the young plants being marketable.
Stage IV All young plants are ready for sale and in the process of being hardened off. This stage lasts about 7 days.
The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central European conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
